Painted as it looks today, yet the people going to the theatre
are ghosts from the past.  There is some very interesting history for Treasure Coast locals associated with this building.  It is said that Indian River County broke off and separated from St. Lucie county over this theatre.  The issue was over Sunday showings of movies on The Lord's Day.  Blue Laws.  Sheriff cars were sent up from the county seat of Fort Pierce to close it down and trouble ensued taking the residents petition all the way up to the state capital in Tallahassee.  Ambitiously built with 800 seats when the population was only 1,200.

Today it could be a beautiful and functioning art center and symbol of not only Indian River County, or just The Treasure Coast but of the Old Florida and the new vibrant artistic Florida - however everything is at a stalemate and standstill, and it seems like the giant elephant in the room will never be any more than a shell for few little shops.

detail from 1929 Plaza Theatre

Dusk Under The Marquee

We cross at dusk.
I'm not sure I believe him
but he wants to dance.

I love dancing.
He smells of soap and spice.
He sits legs crossed at knee.

He drinks sidecars
glancing sidelong
at me.

He gestures softly
as songs sung low
and
I believe he's right.

I believe I'll go.
