The old citrus groves behind a little
corner bait shop on US 1 were sold for
$Millions. Life between Sebastian and
Vero Beach is fast evolving and the scenery
is reflecting the change, but this
unassuming cinderblock gem still stands.
To some of the newcomers it is a
romantic, old, dusty image of a Norman
Rockwell. Other newcomers use it
merely as a signpost; where we “turn east at
the bait shop and follow the road over the
bridge to the beach”, leaving the mainland
to go to the barrier island and the ocean.
Yet the Wabasso Bait Shop evokes
powerful emotions in many long-time
residents. Memories so much larger and
grander than the little fisherman’s pit stop
itself start pouring out as they view the
popular painting.
Now it has become real symbol of not
only Indian River County, or just The
Treasure Coast but of the Old Florida - the
one that reminds locals of their childhood,
the old ways and why they like living here.
It is a touchstone that opens a flood of
tender, poignant memories.

Simply for Peter for just really
very very good reasons.

Gone Fishin' -
All the family wanted me to
add was Gramma and
Grampa, and the old dog and also they needed
the '56 Chevy pick-up truck and of
course themselves with the 3 grand- kids
as they were back then ...but that was
it. Well it was all just memory
until now.

Al Capone Buys Bait
-
hangs in a Chicago home. A snowbird
wanted to commemorate hometown hero
who was through this way
several times, something to do with
importing from The Bahamas. Can't
imagine he needed
to be buying bait.
Louie holds the pole waiting by
the famous Cadillac. Pretty
silly when you think about it.
The car was fun.

The Family Gathering
- added to the work on the
porch as if to greet us as we pull up:
three very very blonde people - just to
give the painting an extra heavy splash of
even more yellow.
